Skate into winter wonderland at downtown Mesa ice rink
Posted Dec.5, 2024
By Joey Titone • Daily Ben staff writer
With the state of Arizona being as warm as it is during the holiday season, it isn’t so common to see things like ice skating around. However, this year, the city of Mesa flipped that narrative.
Running now through Jan. 6, from 5 p.m..to 10 p.m., there is a fully functioning ice arena located off East Main Street and North Centennial Way.
The rink is open every day for the above hours, except for the following, which may have some time changes:
- Dec. 23: noon to 10 p.m.
- Dec. 24: noon to 5 p.m.
- Dec. 25: Closed
- Dec. 26 to Jan. 3: noon to 10 p.m.
The Plaza at Mesa City Center features two acres of public park, an event lawn, water feature, space for food trucks, and a seasonal ice rink.
The event center hosts multiple different holiday themed events throughout the month of December, but the main focal point of them all is the ice arena that was just installed for the winter season.
Some of the events include a holiday movie watch, a reindeer roll and stroll and much more. The prices vary based on which event is happening on the day you pick to go; however, if you are just looking to skate, prices start at $10 for one hour of ice time (skates included).
The website does state that tickets are limited and tend to go fast, so if this is of any interest to you, it would be smart to book your day now and get those tickets while they are here.

Gas price madness hits the Valley
Posted April 18, 2024
By Doug Shack • Daily Ben staff writer
Gas prices in Arizona, particularly in Mesa, are currently at an all-time high. The average price per gallon has been steadily increasing, making it difficult for residents to afford the cost of filling up their tanks. It seems like every time people go to the gas station, they are greeted with higher and higher prices.
Additionally, finding cheaper gas has become a challenge. With prices soaring, it’s becoming increasingly rare to come across a gas station with lower prices. Many residents are now having to shop around or drive further distances in search of more affordable options.
The rising gas prices are impacting not only individual drivers but also businesses that rely on transportation, such as delivery services and rideshare companies. As the cost of fuel continues to rise, it creates a ripple effect on the overall economy, leading to increased expenses for consumers and potentially affecting businesses’ bottom lines.
Overall, the high gas prices in Arizona, particularly in Mesa, are causing financial strain for many residents. Finding ways to cut costs and save on fuel has become a top priority for those who are feeling the squeeze at the pump. Students can take advantage of the Valley’s public transportation as well as carpooling with friends.

Tasty tacos in downtown Mesa

By Tyler Vandewater • Daily Ben staff writer
Recently, I tried Tacos Chiwas in downtown Mesa. Located at 127 W. Main St., these tacos are guaranteed to knock your tastebuds out and keep you coming back for more. I had heard several great things about this resturant, so I decided it was finally time to try it for myself.
I went with their classic carne asada tacos. First things first, these tacos smell amazing. The grilled beef is seasoned just right, making it tender and flavorful. Each bite is a mix of smoky, savory goodness with a hint of spice, and the meat is cooked perfectly. It’s juicy and a little crispy on the edges.
But it’s not just about the meat. The soft tortillas are the perfect holders for the carne asada, and they have a nice, nutty taste. The tacos are topped with fresh onions, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime, adding a fresh contrast to the tasty beef.
You can add some spicy salsa if you like, but the tacos are already bursting with flavor. It’s clear that the chef knows what they’re doing.
What’s great is that everything here is super fresh, from the meat to the tortillas. The restaurant has a cozy Mexican vibe, and the staff is friendly and helpful.
These carne asada tacos only run you $3 for each taco. In today’s world, these prices are almost unbeatable! The next time you find yourself in downtown Mesa, you have to give this place a try!

Micky’s: Affordable and delicious lunch spot
Story and photos by Dapre Rogers • Daily Ben staff member
Posted April 27, 2023
In need of a quick, affordable lunch break that’s walking distance from Gillett? Micky’s Hot Dogs has some great affordable food. Micky’s is known for its $5 hot dogs that are Micky’s own twist on gourmet hot dogs, but it also has some great Mexican food as well.
After practice, a few of my teammates and I went to Micky’s, although there was a slight language barrier from English to Spanish. The employees were very patient with me when I ordered. I ordered two hot dogs, which were filled with beans, tomato, sour cream, mustard and ketchup. I enjoyed these hot dogs as they were very filling for the price of $5. I was also pleasantly surprised with how good they were. To add on, one of my teammates got the carne asada tacos, which were $3 and very tasty.

Something that stood out to me about Micky’s was although it is a small restaurant, it had many different choices in condiments, which were placed and kept cool to use with your meal of choice. Along with having delicious food, Micky’s employees were very welcoming and made eating there a worthwhile experience.
Micky’s is at 108 W. Broadway Road, near Macdonald.

99¢ Tacos every Tuesday

Attention Benedictine students, are you wanting a cheap but tasty meal close to campus?
Look no further than Sabinos Taco shop, located on the corner of Country Club Drive and Sixth Street, just north of University Drive.
The local taco shop has a weekly deal, which includes 99¢ street tacos every Tuesday, and just $1.25 on Fridays.

The street tacos are quite small; however, they are packed full of flavor. Sabinos offers different types of meat for their tacos: carne asada, carnitas, pollo asado, birria, al pastor, and cabeza.

I ordered the carne asada, pollo asado, and carnitas tacos; all of the meats were savory, and their variety of salsas added a pleasant kick.
Sabinos Taco shop doesn’t only have street tacos, they have a huge menu full of options and combos. More information can be found on their website.

Arizona Museum of Natural History
By Trevor Medigovich • Daily Ben staff writer
Posted Oct. 13, 2022

On the corner of Pepper Place and Macdonald, a large dinosaur can be seen bursting out the side of the Arizona Museum of Natural History.
The museum is a great place for kids and adults; they have fun interactive exhibits where you can use all five senses to fully take in and learn all the information displayed.
Right when you walk in, you can see large skeletons of ancient dinosaurs and animals, and continue into the Origins gallery.

This exhibit displays real meteor rocks that you can touch and feel, and plenty of information about how our planet was formed and the rocks and minerals that make up the Earth’s crust.
As you continue down the hallway, the museum opens up and the Dinosaur Mountain fills up the entire building, filled with a running waterfall and multiple statues of ancient dinosaurs and animals. At the bottom of the mountain, the dinosaurs of the Triassic Period can be seen; as you continue to look up, the Jurassic Period is shown along with the dinosaur Mymoorapelta that lived in that period. The mountain continues up, displaying the Cretaceous and the Cenozoic Eras, and at the very top, a black bear and a big horned sheep that roam the Earth today!

On the other side of the museum is the Dinosaur Hall, where they display large skeletons of dinosaurs that roamed the American Southwest and the area around Arizona, such as the Triceratops, Apatosaurus (a real femur from the dinosaur can be touched), Tyrannosaurus Bataar, and many more.

If you go upstairs past the dinosaurs, the Native Cultures of the Ancient Americas and Western North America Gallery take up the entire top floor, displaying art, sculptures and tools created by the Native and Indigenous people who lived in the Southwest and Central America.

One section of the gallery is dedicated to one artist, Andrew Tsinajinie; he was a part of the Navajo Nation, and during World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps and was sent to the Pacific Theater. There he was exposed to Asian and Japanese art, and these art styles influenced his work.

As you follow the gallery, eventually you’ll find your way back downstairs and to the real territorial jail cells where outlaws and criminals served their time. On this same level, you can walk through the Lost Dutchman Mine, where you can see how tight and claustrophobic the conditions the miners had to work in to find gold and silver, along with the tools they used to excavate these sites.

As you exit the mine, you’re brought into the outdoor courtyard, where you can pan for gold and pretend like you’re a paleontologist and discover dinosaur bones.

The Arizona Museum of Natural History is a great place for both children and adults because of their fun, interactive exhibits and the detailed information. With ticket sales between $7 and $13, along with student discounts, the museum is a great place to visit and explore when visiting downtown Mesa.

With the exception of the World Wars and COVID-19, the Arizona State Fair has been an annual event since 1884. Hikes to do around the Mesa area
Posted Oct. 18, 2022
By Anthony Sortino • Daily Ben staff writer
Here in the Mesa area, hiking is a very popular activity to do with friends and family. There are so many hiking trails to go on, but these three to me are very accessible, fun to do and free.
A Mountain: A mountain is a classic hiking trail that many ASU students tend to do but is open for anyone in the ASU area. It is located at East Rio Salado Parkway and Mill Avenue in Tempe.
Hole in the Rock: Hole in the Rock is another staple that many people do with their friends and family. It is very family-friendly and only takes a few minutes to get to the top. This hike shows off a beautiful view of downtown Phoenix and it is even better if you can go during sunrise or sunset. This one is located at North Galvin Parkway and McDowell Road in Phoenix.
Brown Mountain: Brown Mountain is another hike that is family-friendly and takes about 10 minutes to get to the top. When hiking Brown Mountain, make sure you bring athletic shoes because at times it can get slippery, so be careful! The location is near Loop 202 and East Brown Road near Mesa.

The most popular meal at this place is the traditional gyro, which comes with either fries or a salad. For this meal, it is about $10 and if you want to get a drink it is $11. George’s was founded 16 years ago in Mesa. This meal is recommended to fill you up if you’re looking for something quick to eat close to campus.

Can restaurant franchises re-create genuine home-style dishes?
El Jefe Tacos & Sushi Tempe is a restaurant located in the heart of Tempe, Arizona, that serves burritos, tacos, quesadillas & birria, plus sushi rolls & sashimi.
The restaurant’s business hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The restaurant offers a unique mixture of cultural food through traditional Mexican dishes and Asian-derived sushi. The restaurant also has an affordable menu for college students.
I visited the local restaurant and tried its “4 Street Tacos Plate” for $10.98. It was a great amount of food with quality meat.

Attention Benedictine students! Did you know that there is a restaurant that has been described as “the best fried chicken in America” by Forbes Magazine and is just a 15 minute walk from Gillett Hall? Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken in Mesa has been open since 2020, but Gus’s has been around since 1973, and after all these years haven’t changed their secret fried chicken recipe.
When I walked up to the restaurant, on the corner of Main Street and Country Club Drive, the first thing that caught my eye was their big red and yellow sign. But as soon as I walked past their outside seating area, I opened their door and instantly the warm, comforting smell of fried chicken found its way to me and I became even more excited for the meal to come.
I started with their fried okra, which came out really quick. The basket was overflowing with small fried greens with a little cup of ranch. When you bit into the fried okra, it just about burst with flavor and almost melted in your mouth.
Then I ordered the 3 Piece White Combo, which included two breasts and a wing, along with a side of coleslaw and baked beans. The chicken was fried to perfection, the skin on the chicken was crispy and had a nice little kick to it as well, that seemed to have gone straight through the skin to the tender, juicy white meat chicken. The coleslaw had a perfect balance of acidity, creaminess and crunch, and the baked beans were a flavorful complement, and I could easily finish an entire cup.
I was pleasantly surprised by this fantastic restaurant. I’ve lived in Mesa for two years and I have yet to try this restaurant, but I will soon become a regular at this small but spectacular establishment.
Price range: If you’re looking for a large meal within $10 to $20, Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken is the spot you’re looking for.

Mangos: Delicious and affordable

Hello, BenU family! Going into my fourth year at Benedictine Mesa, I know how hard it can be to find an excellent quality food spot near our campus. The first place that came straight to mind was Mangos Mexican Café. When you first walk in, there is no waiting to be seated. You simply can jump straight in line and order your meal at the counter. This can be beneficial if you are in a rush to make it to the next class. But do not let this sway you from how high and fresh the quality of food is that is handed out. Although the food may be pricier, you really are getting a bang for your buck! I ordered the chicken nachos, which were easily enough food to be shared by multiple people and which was very tasty. Furthermore, when I visited Mangos, it was a quieter atmosphere; this allows you to get some quick study time in and bring a friend with you to enjoy some of those nachos. Find Mangos just down the street at Main Street and Macdonald.
